Constant Conversions Usability Testing

ConstantConversions.com is a site that sells writing services from newsletters and ebooks to site content. They specialize in creating Web content that’s appealing, engaging and which promotes conversions.

I was asked by founder Dean Shanson to perform three tasks. Dean warned me that he wasn’t happy with the site’s current set-up which made it a perfect time to test: before re-designing… and repeating the mistakes

Tasks:

1. Order a ready-made newsletter.

2. Enquire about a custom-made newsletter.

3. Enquire about content writing.

Watch the usability test video:

Video summary and suggestions:

  • The site’s look is acceptable but outdated. There are many great templates for Joomla that can make the site appear much nicer and more professional.
  • There is a big empty space on the right, “above the fold.” This is the most important “real estate” on a Web page. make it work for you!
  • The newsletter sign-up on the top right is in a good position, but I would like some text that indicates that “we will not share your email” and maybe even a link to view some samples.
  • I was able to find the order page quite easily but I got confused between the two services available. Maybe a short description or a link to an explanation page next to each service would be helpful.
  • The order page states that clients will not be charged until they approve the newsletter. This is a GREAT selling point and should be emphasized, not hidden. Maybe you could place this statement on the big, empty space on the home page.
  • Finding the contact page was easy.
  • The services menu on the right doesn’t only show only services; it also shows information. Separate the services from the other content and move the services to the top menu.
  • The samples are great but when they open in a new window, it’s better to not show the template. Use index2 instead of index on the URL.

Conclusions:

  • The site is not bad, but not great and could be made a great deal more exciting.
  • The design is outdated and needs refreshing.
  • Re-think the menus on the top and the side.
  • Emphasize the fact that clients don’t pay unless they like the newsletter.
